Stellantis NV paid $190 million in civil penalties in the first half of 2024 for failing to meet U.S. fuel efficiency standards, filings with regulators showed.

WASHINGTON — New vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to average about 38 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2031 in real-world driving, up from about 29 mpg this year, under new federal rules.

U.S. automakers achieved a record average of 26 miles per gallon for vehicles made in the 2022 model year, but still fell short of current fuel standards, according to EPA data on Dec. 20.
